2023 Calendar competition!

Next year will mark 45 years since Deen City Farm first opened its doors back in 1978.  To celebrate this milestone, we are launching a Photography Competition ahead of our big celebrations in 2023.  

The competition is looking for 12 very special photos to feature in a commemorative 2023 calendar.

We would love to see a variety of photos from the last four and a half decades of the farm. The photos can feature animals, the farm in general and/or people, but please ensure you have permission to submit your photo from any identifiable individuals in your entry.  

The 12 lucky winners will have their photos featured and credited in the calendar and also receive a free copy when the calendar is launched later this year.  

When entering a photograph, please provide your name, contact details including an email address and tell us the story behind your photograph, including when & where it was taken.  

To Enter: photographs can be sent via email to information@deencityfarm.co.uk, with email subject: ‘Calendar Competition 2023’ or via post – please mark for the attention of ‘Calendar Competition 2023’.  

Please don’t send original photos as we will not be able to return them. Photos must be of good quality to print. By entering, you are confirming that you agree with the competition’s terms and conditions (found below) and provide consent for the photograph to be used in our calendar or during our 2023 celebrations.

Photography Competitions Terms and Conditions:  

The competition is to have a photograph featured in the Deen City Farm & Riding School Commemorative Calendar 2023.  

Entrants are responsible for ensuring they have read and understood the terms and conditions and requirements for photos. Any entry found not to comply will be disqualified.  

Eligibility & requirements:  

  1. The competition is free to enter and open to everyone of all ages, including Professional Photographers. A maximum of 2 entries per person is permitted.  
  2. Images entered into the competition must not have previously been offered for sale, featured in paid publications, won or been runner-up in any other photography or calendar competition.  
  3. Entries will not be returned, once the winners have been decided all other entries will be destroyed along with entrance details in accordance with GDPR. 
  4. Photographs can be entered by email addressed to ‘Calendar Competition 2023’ to information@deencityfarm.co.uk or via Post; ‘Calendar Competition 2023’ Deen City Farm & Riding School, 39 Windsor Avenue, London, SW19 2RR.  
  5. Physical copy photographs should be no smaller than 7x5 inches and no larger than an A4 piece of paper.  
  6. Electronic copy photographs should be submitted as JPEGs or PDF and be no larger than 10MB. Files larger than this may be rejected by our email server.  
  7. When entering a photograph, please provide your name, contact details including an email address and tell us the story behind your photograph, including when & where it was taken.  

Subject: 

  1. Photographs must have been taken at Deen City Farm & Riding School, either at the Aberdeen Road site between 1978 - 1980, Batsworth Road 1980 - 1994 or at the current Windsor Avenue site.  
  2. You must have permission to submit your photo from all identifiable individuals featured before entering the competition.  
  3. Do not do anything to injure or distress animals or cause damage to the environment when taking photographs. Any photos deemed to be in breach of this will be disqualified immediately.  

Judging, notification, and contact:  

  1. Deen City Farm will appoint judges to choose the winning entries. The organiser’s decision on all matters relating to the competition is final, and no correspondence will be entered into concerning the judging and organisation of the competition.  
  2. The competition closing date is Midnight on Monday 8th August 2022.   
  3. The winners will be announced on Deen City Farm’s social media and also  

    contacted directly via email no later than Wednesday 7th September 2022. 

  4. The prize for the winners of the competition is to have their photograph featured in the calendar and one copy of the calendar when it is published. There is no substitute prize available, financial reward or cash alternative. The winners must also agree for their photograph to be displayed at Deen City Farm, during the 45 year anniversary celebrations. 

Disclaimer: 

  1. The organiser’s reserve the right to cancel the competition at any stage, if deemed necessary or due to unforeseen circumstances out of the organiser’s control. The organisers reserve the right to remove a winner’s entry from the final calendar if they are found to be in breach of the terms and conditions at any time.

More animal care courses announced. How to Keep… Guinea Pigs, Rabbits and Ferrets. Saturday afternoons in August

More animal care courses at Deen City Farm! On three Saturdays in August, 2pm to 4pm, we’ll be running three short courses on How to Keep… Guinea Pigs, Rabbits and Ferrets. Two hours covering all aspects of caring for these small furries, with plenty of contact time. Oh alright then, cuddles. August 4th– Guinea Pigs. August 11th – Rabbits. August 18th – Ferrets. Just £15 a place, 10 places per course. Everyone over 7 welcome. Suitable for prospective and current owners.

New course! Introduction to Keeping Chickens. Limited places.

On Saturday July 28th, 1pm to 4pm, right here on the Farm, we’ll be running an “Introduction to Keeping Chickens” course for anyone thinking of getting their own chickens. No existing knowledge required. We’ll cover everything you need to think about and plan for, with advice on choosing breeds, on what equipment you’ll need to buy, and how to look after your chickens. The three-hour course will include plenty of hands-on time learning how to handle chickens safely and confidently. It’ll be a hen party, but you’ll be left with a great feeling (and handouts) instead of a hangover. £25 per person, children over 7 welcome. Includes refreshments. To make sure everyone has lots of chicken-time, there’ll be just 8 places. Book early!

The course will be run by Nick Golson, Farm Manager, RAU graduate and chicken-liker. 

What the course will cover:

Thinking it all through: reasons to keep chickens, commonly asked questions

What you need in terms of housing and equipment, how to deal with foxes, what to feed

How to choose and buy the chickens: hybrids, pure breeds, bantams

How to get them home and settle them in

The daily, weekly and monthly routine

Pest control and predators

Seasonal care

Behaviour

Eggs

Basic anatomy, general health and health problems

Easter is coming!

Hopefully there’s less snow and more sunshine, but that only time will tell… As per usual, we’ll be running extra activities during the Easter holidays.

  • During the week from Tuesday to Friday we’ll have our Animal Handling (Tues & Thurs) and Groom A Goat (Weds & Fri), running from 10:00 – 12:00pm and 2:00 – 4:00pm 
  • Pony Rides will be running on all those days too at 12:00pm as well at 3:00pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
  • Good Friday, Easter Sunday and the first week of the holidays you’ll be able to take part in our craft activities! (Supplies permitting)
  • From Good Friday through to the following Friday will be our Easter Egg Hunt!
  • The Barn Owl Café will be open from 10:00 – 3:00pm, and the kiosk in the portacabin will be open until 4:30pm

We will also be running our regular holiday programme with Own A Pony and Young Farmer days. There’s still spaces available so for further information and booking check our holiday programmes page

 

Young Artist’s Day, Saturday 20th May!

Looking for something to do on Saturday 20th May? Feeling like letting your inner artist lose? 

One of our lovely volunteers, Gaja, will be running a Young Artists Day workshop for ages 3 – 7 in our Porta-cabin!

It’ll be running from 11:00am to 1:00pm. Just turn up and join in for £2.50, all the art materials will be provided and there may even be a prize in it for the Best Young Artist!

February Half Term!

The first half term of the year is upon us! We’ll be running our school holiday activities as listed below from the Tuesday 14th to Friday 17th. Please be aware that, as we normally are, we’ll be closed to the public on Monday 13th.

Holiday Schemes

As per usual, we’ll be running our Own A  Pony and Young Farmer days across Tuesday – Friday  (Now fully bookable online via our website, you can check availability and pay via the Holiday Schemes webpage). A full day helping on the farm or working with the horses for ages 8+, check out the above link for more information on what the day might entail.

Animal Handling

Will take place in the yellow and white marquee out by the fields will be taking place from 10:00 – 12:00pm and 2:00 – 4:00pm Tuesday – Friday at £2 a go. A chance to get up close and personal with our small pets.

Pony Rides

Will be in the gardens at the end of the arena, Tuesday – Friday at 12:00pm and weekends at 3:00pm at £2 a go, for ages 7 and under.

Barn Owl Café

Will be open full days, 10:00am until 4:00pm (take away only from 3:00pm).

 

If you’ve not been in a while, the bridge next to the farm entrance is now fixed and accessible to the public, hurrah! Once again there’s easy access onto the farm entrance from Phipps Bridge Road, making it an easy walk once again from the Phipps Bridge tram stop to the farm.

We aim to put on a full roster of activities throughout the holidays, but it may depend on staff availability. If anything is likely to vary we’ll aim to update via our Facebook page as soon as possible!
