Our Cows

Deen City Farm has two breeding cows, namely Devon (right) and Isabel (below).

Devon was purchased 'in calf' in 2006 and had a bull calf on 10th November 2006. She is a "Belted Galloway" - a breed identified by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust as 'traditional' in terms of being in danger. The picture shows Devon's white 'belt' very clearly.

Isabel has been at the Farm much longer than Devon and is a British White - a traditional breed for the UK. Isobel has had two calves in the past couple of years and is expecting another one in 2008.

Cows are herd animals and the two of them live very happily together in one of the large pens at the Farm. Both are beef cows, as opposed to dairy cows, and therefore do not produce milk except when they are in calf or have a calf at foot.

Long-term friends of the Farm will remember Magic, a short-legged Dexter, that was here up until the autumn of 2006. Magic moved on to Vauxhall City Farm where she will be a companion animal to other cows. The decision to move Magic on was made because she was very unlikely to breed in the future and Deen City Farm's aims include showing as many stages of the life cycle as possible. With limited space and the option to bring in a rare breed, Magic choose a take a happy retirement!
