Cob Building Workshop

The Growing Gardens Project, sponsored by Children in Need, has a very exciting project at the bottom of the garden:  creating a cob building!

Kevin McCabe (a professional cob builder!) ran a workshop for us here at the farm on the 9 and 10 September 2006. We had many keen people prepared to give up their time and a little of their money to make the project happen. It was a really messy weekend as the photos on the next few pages show, but it was great, educational fun! We have had many wonderful volunteers helping us on the project, hopefully they can now all go away and make their own cobs!

The building is still in progress and we plan to put a turf roof upon it, along with solar panels to light it. Please come to visit and check on our progress! When it is completed it will be used for a children’s storytelling area, along with being an area for the volunteers to relax in and a space to hold mini activities.

What is a cob?

Cob is an ancient earth building technique, which uses a combination of earth, straw, sand and water.

These ingredients were traditionally mixed together by families or the local community. The mix is formed into lumps or ‘cobs’ which are then pressed or stamped together to form the walls of a building rather like a giant clay pot!

Cob Fact:

The cob process is environmentally friendly; we tried to use all the natural resources at the farm to build the cob.

With Thanks...

Deloitte Corporate Tax team - for putting in an even longer (but slightly different) day than usual.

Killoughery Ltd - for giving us our clay and aggregates.

Mayday Plant Hire - for lending us a digger and a cement mixer.

Keith May - for giving a demonstration in brick laying.

The Weekend workshop helpers - thank you for all your hard work!

All the other volunteers at the farm who have helped us out with the cob building….thank you Eric for reviving our door!
