Twelve volunteers from Deen City Farm took part in the Festival of City Farming and Community Gardening on Saturday 17th September at Capel Manor College.
The Festival is an annual event, where all the London City Farms and Community Gardens from London get together. The public are invited to watch many young people taking part in an Animal Show as well as viewing a range of vegetables and flowers grown in the City's Community Gardens.
Deen City Farm’s volunteer’s enthusiasm and team work, as well as knowledge and animal handling skills won them a combined total of six 1st place, four 2nd place, two 3rd place and numerous ‘special’ rosettes.
The Farm accumulated a total of 28 points making Deen City the overall champions, four points ahead of last years winner Vauxhall City Farm who took a well-deserved second place.
Isobel Mackintosh, Deen City Farm’s youngest representative (aged 9), astounded the judges with her vast animal knowledge and won 1st place for Best Handler with Catkin the sheep and 1st place for Best Turkey.
Deen City Farm’s Garden was also a great success, scooping 1st place for Unusual Container (an umbrella with flowers suspended like rain drops frozen in time) and 2nd for Miniature Garden. The Garden also won free tickets to take the volunteers to Chelsea Physic Garden!
There was a great atmosphere with all the City Farms working together, with a friendly competitive element! The public could also get involved in the “Have-a-go tent” where Deen City Farm offered the chance to create a cardboard city farm.
At the end of a very busy day, staff and volunteers ‘pulled their weight’ against the other Farms coming second in the tug-of-war competition!
Deen City Farm would like to say a huge thank you for all those involved and invite you to come and meet our prize-winning animals!
